Stateroom

My Stateroom

My desk, rack and stereo on Michelson, 1970-1971. These were luxurious accommodations for an enlisted sailor of that period. I was reading "The Panay Incident". I no longer remember the symbolism of the hanging creature. In fact, much of my behavior during this period is now obscure.

My Stateroom

With only two men in a four-man stateroom, we had plenty of room. My stereo on an unused rack.

My Stateroom

Entry door, and refrigerator (complete with lock, so it could not be opened during inspections.) The hanging wine bottle served as a roll indicator for new crewmen who had not yet gotten their sea legs. Considerate, weren't we?

The Refrigerator

It's not what you think. Considerate softdrink makers bottled their products in simulated beer bottles and shipped them overseas so young sailors far from home would have reminders of home. I got my root beer in Heineken bottles (Heh...heh...heh).
