A 50 cts, centavos I think, note.
There was this little bar (heh..heh..in Spain there was a bar everywhere) near the entrance to the funicular railway (look it up, I had to) to the ski resort of Nuria (now called "Vall de Nuria"). I had some wine with this little old man, and he gave me this bill. Although he didn't speak much English, and my Spanish was limited to things I wanted from pretty girls, we somehow had a long conversation. During the Spanish Civil War, every municipality had to make it's own money, and this bill was from a small town in the Barcelona area. My new friend had fought in the Civil War, and he gave me this as a memento. I think I gave him an American dollar bill in return, all I had that was
American to give away. Actually, Washington was a good choice, but an Abraham Lincoln would have been better, to recall the Lincoln Brigade. It was one of those genuinely amazing incidents of
spontaneous friendship.
