These Uzushio-class boats were the first Japanese subs with a tear drop hull. She was a brand new boat at the time, commissioned 2 Feb 1972.
This shot was taken at sea way east of Japan. We got a radio message that an underwater volcano had been erupting and growing into a brand new island. We steamed over to take a look. This is the tip of the underwater mountain a few days after breaking the surface.
