Dennis was known as Mr. Smiley!
The MSC stewards treated us very well. It's hard to believe you could get such duty in the Navy.

George Mesko was the ship's carpenter while I was on board the Hess. He taught me so many things about carpentry. We were pretty good friends by the time I finished my tour.

If I recall correctly, this was not a repair of the magnetometer. I believe the oceanographers wanted to verify the length and therefore the distance the magnetometer was actually trailing behind the Hess.
The ones I recognize are John Hollister (CO-3rd from the left), Thomas Kornegay EMO-fourth from the left), Jim VanArsdale (6th from the left), and the tall guy on the right would be the oceanographer. I believe his name is Dick Vebillious.
Miles Schreiner and I, among others, were fortunate to have George "Bear" Lamica as our photographer. He spent countless hours teaching us the principles and practice of black and white photography. Here, Miles and I are practicing our skills on each other. He probably has a similar photograph of me on the next deck up.
Oceanographers, from left to right Dick Vibellius, Pat Malabad, Jim McNulty, Jim Pastor
Pat Malabad (NAVOCEANO oceanographer) is one of those people you meet in life that makes you happy to be alive. Thanks Pat.
Phil Pellowski (RM3) and I really enjoyed our trap shooting from the fantail. He bought an Ithaca/SKB over-under shotgun from the base exchange in Yokosuka (only $175) and I was jealous. It was a fine shooting shotgun!

This is the day we played a beer ball game against Oceanographic Unit 2. I can't recall who won.
