My name is Lisa Olson Belkofer and my dad, Victor
Olson, was an oceanographer on the TAG-S ships for 16 years from 1964
through 1979. His last cruise was Nov 1979. Unfortunately my dad died
suddenly in Feb 1980.
Thank you so much for putting this site
together!!! It has given me a wonderful insight into what my dad (and all of
the rest of the crew) did for most of my life. And a great appreciation for
what he had to endure........I never thought about the storms at sea!
The picture I have attached was taken in Japan in 1967. My dad is in the
second row, 4th from the left. I suspect that there are others from the ship
that are in this picture but I don't have any names. Thought you could put
it on the website and maybe others will recognize them. I would love to hear
from anyone as well.
I am using the site and cross referencing the
ship movements with the postcards I recieved from my dad to figure out which
cruise he was on when. Without this site I would never been able to figure
it out! . . I have one letter from my dad that was sent to my mom
and he mentioned that they had to return to port to disembark a sailor
because he was sick or was injured.....I can't remember. But that might be
interesting to someone.
Several of the pictures/memories that were
posted by others have brought back memories. Especially the compressed
styrofoam coffee cup!! I remember my dad saying they did that!! I don't
remember if he brought one home or not, but that would have been a cool
souvenir.
